Albania is perhaps the most interesting of all the Balkan countries and well worth a standalone destination. Albania emerged from the ravage of WWII as a communist state ruled by dictator Enver Hoxha where he transformed the country into one of the most tightly controlled society in Europe. Albania remained reclusive for most of the 20th century and only started to open to the world after the collapse of the communist regimes in 1989.
Be prepared to be amazed by Albania’s stunning mountain scenery, dynamic capital, crumbling castles and its numerous UNESCO sites. Tirana, the heart and capital of Albania is a pleasure to wander while the nearby medieval town of Berat is endowed with many historical monuments, cobbled streets and river. Do not miss out Gjirokastra, the museum city and birthplace of Enver Hoxha, lies in the shadow of the mighty castle. Butrint, the largest archaeological park is dotted with Illyrian, Greek, Roman, Ottoman and Venetian ruins. All these impressive cities and sights can now be enjoyed without the tourist crowd.
