Embark on a journey through the heart of Tohoku, a region renowned for its pristine natural beauty, rich cultural heritage, and delectable cuisine. Our journey begins in Sendai where you will visit the “Five-Colored Pond” of Zao Okama and the Miyagi Fox Village. Enjoy a scenic ferry ride across Matsushima Bay before continuing to Ichinoseki, visiting ancient temples and the dramatic cliffs of Genbikei Gorge. Immerse in Otsuchi’s local experiences such as the deer dismantling demonstration or trout farm fishing. Thereafter, we will head to Morioka to discover Nambu Tekki, the traditional ironware of Iwate prefecture celebrated for its exceptional craftsmanship and durability. We have planned delicious cuisine, as well as great spots to experience cherry blossoms or autumn foliage away from the crowd, allowing you to experience Tohoku at its finest.

Day 01 Arrival in Tokyo / Sendai

Upon your arrival in Tokyo, enjoy a seamless transfer to the train station, where your adventure continues with a picturesque journey to the charming city of Sendai.

Train: Tokyo to Sendai

Embark on a scenic journey aboard the sleek bullet train (1h 55m), whisking you away to the vibrant city of Sendai.

Transfer: Train Station to Hotel

Upon arrival at Sendai Station, be warmly welcomed and seamlessly transferred to your accommodation. Complete your journey with a smooth hotel check-in, setting the stage for a comfortable and memorable stay.

The rest of the day is free at your own time. You may want to check out local delicacies such as Beef Tongue Kaku, known to be expertly grilled (at your own cost).

Day 02 Sendai

Transfer: Sendai to Miyagi

Depart for Miyagi with a 2-hour journey, ready to begin your exciting tour of the region.

Miyagi Fox Village

This morning, make your way to Miyagi Fox Village. This charming wildlife park is home to over 100 foxes of diverse breeds, allowing visitors to observe and interact with these fascinating creatures in a semi-natural environment. Known for its scenic beauty and playful foxes, the village offers a rare and immersive experience with these remarkable animals. The serene natural surroundings become especially enchanting during the vibrant autumn season.

For lunch, enjoy a delightful meal at Mori no Mebuki Tamagoya Zao Main Store (own cost), where you can savor delicious, locally-inspired dishes.

Zao Okama

In the afternoon, continue (1hr 15m) to your journey to Zao Okama, the stunning crater lake nestled within the Zao mountain range. Also known as the “Five-Colored Pond,” its vibrant hues shift with the sunlight, creating a mesmerizing spectacle against the rugged volcanic landscape. A popular destination for hiking, the area’s beauty shines year-round but reaches its peak during autumn and winter, when the landscape is ablaze with color.

For dinner, delight in an exquisite culinary experience at Date’s Irori Grill Kura no Sho, where the expertly crafted course menu showcases the finest seasonal ingredients and traditional Japanese flavors.

Day 03 Sendai / Ichinoseki or Hanamaki

Murakami-ya

Discover the irresistible flavors of Sendai’s renowned Zunda Mochi at Murakami-ya, a beloved shop celebrated for its perfectly soft rice cakes covered in creamy, sweet edamame paste.

Grave of Date Masamune

Visit Zuihoden, the magnificent mausoleum of Date Masamune, one of the most influential feudal lords of the Edo Period (1603-1868). Nestled amidst a serene forest, this beautifully ornate structure reflects the grandeur of Masamune’s legacy as the founder of Sendai. It serves as a fascinating glimpse into the history of the Date clan and their rule from Aoba Castle.

If availability permits, enjoy an intimate Japanese omakase experience at Chimatsushima, a charming restaurant that can accommodate only seven guests at a time. Chimatsushima is listed under Michelin Guide as a 1-Star restaurant.

Matsushima Bay

In the afternoon, continue to Shiogama port (1hr). Board the ferry from Shiogama to Matsushima, embarking on a scenic journey across the bay.

Located just half an hour from Sendai, Matsushima is renowned for its stunning bay, dotted with numerous pine-clad islets, and is considered one of Japan’s three most scenic views. The town is also home to Zuiganji, one of the Tohoku region’s most significant Zen temples, offering a peaceful and historical atmosphere for visitors.

Day 04 Ichinoseki or Hanamaki / Otsuchu or Miyako

Chusonji Exclusive Zazen Experience

Visit Chūson-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its golden Konjikidō (Golden Hall). Founded in 850, it holds cultural and spiritual significance. Motsuji Temple

Visit Mōtsū-ji Temple, famous for its serene Pure Land Garden, a stunning example of Heian-period landscape design. Founded in 850, the temple once housed grand halls and was a significant Buddhist center. Today, explore its tranquil atmosphere, historic ruins, and enjoy the beauty of each changing season.

For lunch, savor a hearty meal at Ushiya Kaku-no-Shin Main Store, a celebrated establishment known for its premium beef dishes.

Genbikei Gorge

In the afternoon, make your way to explore the breathtaking beauty of Genbikei Gorge, a natural wonder carved by the Iwai River over millennia. Begin a two-hour journey to Morioka. If flight time permits, you will have option to partake in one of the below two options this morning.

Hoonji Temple

Hoonji Temple offers a peaceful escape with its traditional wooden architecture and tranquil atmosphere. The temple is especially known for its statues of the 500 Rakan, which bring a sense of spiritual calm and connection to those who seek a quiet moment of meditation.

Enjoy a delightful lunch at Azumaya, where you can savor authentic wanko soba in a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Wanko soba is a delicacy unique to the Iwate area.

Experience Iwate’s Traditional Crafts – Nambu Ironware

In the afternoon, discover Nambu Tekki, the traditional cast ironware of Iwate Prefecture, renowned for its durability, heat retention, and elegant designs. Originating in the 17th century, this craft includes a range of items such as teapots and cookware, blending practicality with artistry. Train: Morioka to Tokyo

Arrive at Morioka Station and board the Shinkansen for a comfortable 2-3 hour journey to Tokyo.

Transfer: Train Station to Airport

You will be transferred to the airport for your onwards flight.
