Denmark is a nation well-known for many things: a rich Viking history, impressive castles, cutting-edge new Nordic cuisine, and modern design and living that incorporates a “hygge” sense of contentment and warmth.
On this journey, we go beyond the capital Copenhagen for the many local experiences that the country offers, starting from the beautiful landscape of North Jutland and Skagen that once had a thriving artist colony. Experience the rich culture and bustling scene in Denmark’s second city Aarhus, and then immerse yourself into the literary world of Hans Christian Andersen at Odense. In Zealand, glorious castles await exploration, as well as the Viking history at Roskilde, before returning to Copenhagen – a cultural, culinary and historical mecca. There is so much to experience, that a return trip is always warranted!
Arrive in Aalborg Airport, and meet your English-speaking driver at the airport for your transfer to Skagen (approx. 1.5hrs). En route, make a stop at Rubjerg Kunde lighthouse.
As the northernmost destination in Denmark, Skagen is a renowned town with amazing light, combined with a unique nature and white sand beaches. In the center of the city, you will find a wide selection of restaurants, shopping options, experiences for children, and interesting cultural attractions.

Today you will visit the most famous attractions in Skagen, such as the Skagen’s Museum which houses a grand collection of masterpieces by famous Skagen painters, and the Anchers House which was the home of renowned painters Anna and Michael Ancher featuring their art collection of more than a thousand pieces by other European artists as well as an eclectic interiors featuring period furniture and decorative objects collected from around the world.
Skagen Region Highlights (6hrs)
Enjoy an excursion taking in the beautiful landscapes around Skagen and attractions outside the city. You will visit Skagen light house, Råbjerg Mile, the largest migrating dune in Denmark, Tilsande church which is buried in the sand by the migrating dunes, and the northernmost tip of Denmark called Grenen, where the Baltic Sea and North Sea meets.
After breakfast, depart for Aalborg (approx. 1.5hrs) where you have some time to explore its old town and enjoy lunch, before continuing onwards to Aarhus, Denmark’s second city.
Aarhus Walking Tour (3hrs)
Meet your local guide at your hotel who will take you on a walking tour of the ‘3rd most sustainable city in the world’, taking in its key highlights. Stroll the cobblestone streets of its Old Town, visit the ARoS Aarhus Art Museum and soak up the Street Art and more.
Himmelbjerget Excursion (Half-Day)
In the afternoon, transfer to Himmelbjerget (Sky Mountain), which is Denmark’s highest at 147m. Enjoy a hike up to the Himmelbjerget Tower for a panoramic view of the surroundings.
After breakfast, depart for Hans Christian Andersen’s hometown, Odense (approx. 2hrs).
Odense Walking Tour (3hrs)
Join your local guide to explore the birth city of Denmark’s most famous fairytale writer in the world, with its characterful old streets, inspiring museums and strong cycling culture. Visit the newly opened Hans Christian Andersen House Museum which tells not only about the author but brings to life his works through an interactive exhibition utilizing architecture, art, design, sound, light and images. See his childhood home where he was born and is today one of the oldest poet museums in the world.
Transfer from Odense to Copenhagen (approx. 2hrs 15min direct), with some interesting stops en route.
Egeskov Castle Visit
Egeskov Castle is one of Funen’s key landmark – the best-preserved moat castle in Europe. Experience an award-winning park, the beautiful chambers and halls inside of the castle, as well as Europe’s first Camping Outdoor Museum.
Continue on your drive to Roskilde, crossing the Great Belt Bridge that links Funen and Zealand. One of the largest bridges in the world – this impressive structure is 18km long and comprises of a suspension bridge, a low level bridge and an undersea tunnel.
Roskilde City Tour (2hrs)
Arrive in Roskilde, a former capital of Denmark. This ancient city oozes of history and is a must for anyone with a knack for Vikings. Explore its old medieval town and streets and visit the UNESCO Heritage Roskilde Cathedral.
Copenhagen Walking Tour (3hrs)
Meet your local guide for a walking tour of Copenhagen, to the must-see highlights where you will listen to riveting stories of the past and present. Walk down the cobbled stoned streets in the oldest part of Copenhagen, and see hidden gems and backyards. You will get to learn more about the royal family as you pass Christiansborg, the Danish parliament, before ending your tour at the royal residence, Amalienborg, with the pomp and circumstance of the change of the guards.
Copenhagen Canal Tour (1hr)
Experience the idyllic harbours and canals of Copenhagen with a canal tour, seeing the capital from a different perspective.
You have some time to explore on your own, and we can recommend excellent museums to visit depending on your interest, or assist with restaurant reservations at one of the leading restaurants of the new Nordic food scene.
North Zealand Castles and Countryside (8hrs)
Leave Copenhagen with your driver and guide and drive through the countryside of rural villages and woodlands in Northern Zealand, taking in some of its famous landmarks such as Frederiksborg Castle, with beautiful landscape gardens and today houses the Museum of National History. You will next visit the Kronborg Castle, the setting of Hamlet and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Return to Copenhagen along the coastal road, and if time permits, art enthusiasts should check out the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (additional costs apply).
After breakfast, transfer to Copenhagen Airport for your departure flight.
