This trip can be the perfect add-on after your Kenya or Tanzania safari, or a journey to Africa in its own right!
Arriving into Kigali, you will be met and driven approximately 20 minutes into your hotel.
If time permits and at an additional cost, you may visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial to learn about the nation’s sombre past.
Car Transfer: Kigali to Akagera National Park
Begin your day very early in the morning with a 3.5 hours transfer to Akagera National Park gate, followed by an hour game drive transfer to arrive at your lodge.
Afternoon Game Drive
Stretching across a vast expanse of low-lying mountains and some of the most scenic savannah in East Africa, Akagera is teeming with plain games and is home to one of Africa’s highest hippo densities, some very large crocodiles and more than 520 bird species.
After settling into your tent, follow your expert guide for your afternoon game drive which extends into an exhilarating night drive, offering the opportunity to observe the nocturnal animals.
Game Drive & Boat Cruise
Enjoy a full day of game drive and activities at Akagera National Park. Your packages includes guided game drives and boat cruises. You may want to cruise at Lake Rwanyakazinga, which is home to hippos, crocodiles, as well as numerous avian and aquatic species.
Car Transfer: Akagera National Park to Volcanoes National Park
Rise for another morning game drive before you are transferred approximately 6 hours by car to arrive at Volcanoes National Park.
Volcanoes National Park is best known as a sanctuary for the mountain gorillas. Visitors flock here to experience a face-to-face encounter with these intriguing creatures. The park is set high on the jungle-covered slopes of the volcanic Virunga Mountains and highly regulated treks through the reserve allow visitors to spend an hour at a time with these incredible primates in their natural habitat.
Gorilla Tracking
After an early breakfast, you will be driven to the park headquarters for a briefing and assignment to your gorilla family.
The breathtaking trek, in which you follow in the footsteps of the rare and critically endangered mountain gorilla, starts in the foothills of the Virungas with eye-catching views in all directions. Trekking through the forest, the experienced trackers will soon bring you up close to one family gorilla group. During the hour with the great apes, you will learn about their daily lives and feeding patterns.
Thereafter, you will return to your lodge and the rest of the day is free at leisure.
Car Transfer: Hotel to Airport
Depending on your departure flight, you may wish to consider spending your morning to track the equally rare Golden Monkey (at an additional cost).
After checking out, you will be driven approximately 3 hours to Kigali airport for your onward journey.
