Family Travel, Outdoor & Adventure, History & Culture
The Gyeongsang provinces in the southeast of the country is a land of mountains, ruins, temples and museums, offering some of the most wonderful cultural sights that South Korea has to offer.
Let us bring you back to the times of Silla Empire between 57 BC and 935 AD when Gyeongju was the ancient capital and now a repository of priceless treasures. We will also visit the nation’s second largest city, a seaside gem with historic sites and fantastic seafood.
Arriving into Busan, we drive 20km or about ½hour into the city centre. Step back in time to Gaya Dynasty at Museum of Bokcheon (closed Mon) and the ancient tombs outdoor exhibition. Stroll a nearby path to Dongnaeeupseong Fortress North Gate, a fortress erected as protection from Japanese invasions in 1592.
Early morning, ride the Geumgang Park cable car up to a small mountain followed by a 40-minute trek to Seokbulsa Temple with its rewarding scenery and intricate Buddha carvings. After visiting UN Peace Memorial Hall (closed Mon) and UN Cemetery, we visit Cheongsapo Village and stroll through a skywalk bridge overlooking the coast and a lighthouse. Conclude with a 1-hour Haeundae Yacht cruise glimpsing into Busan’s romantic night view including the Gwangan Bridge and The Bay 101.
Drive north 50km or about 1hour to Ulsan. Detour to Daewangam Park with dragon rocks carved by the wind and ocean. Head to Bangudae Petroglyphs (UNESCO) on the lower western banks of the man-made lake. Visit Museum of Petroglyphs (closed Mon) featuring both sea and land animals depicted on rocks, indicating the ancient people’s desire for food and fertility. A further 50km or about 1 hour brings us to Korea’s ancient capital of Gyeongju.
Visit Gyeongju National Museum displaying Silla Dynasty’s cultural artifacts and Silla Arts & Science Museum (closed Mon) to explore the roots of Korean science. Wander through the Royal Tomb of King Taejong Muyeol, Tomb of Cheonmachong, Cheomseongdae stargazing tower and Donggung Palace & Wolji Pond.
After visiting Yangdong traditional village which showcases the national treasures and folklores from the Joseon Dynasty, we head to two UNESCO sites of strong Buddhist importance: Bulguksa Temple and Seokguram Grotto on the slopes of Mount Tohamsan.
Drive 95km or about 1½hour for boating at Amethyst Cavern Park, Korea’s largest man-made cave inside a closed amethyst mine. A further 10km or about ½ hours brings us to Busan’s Nampoa Dong Shopping district where you can hunt for Korean souvenirs such as kimchi and gingseng. At the end of the day, we transfer 20km or about ½hours to Busan Airport to board your flight home.
