9-11 DAYS JOURNEY INTO MUSTANG: GATEWAY TO NEPAL’S LAST FORBIDDEN KINGDOM
KATHMANDU, JOMSOM
Outdoor & Adventure, Off the Beaten, Nature & Wildlife
Nestled in the shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain ranges, Mustang is a remote and mystical region which once housed the “Kingdom of Lo-Manthang” and was forbidden to foreigners until 1992. Renowned for its stark, arid landscapes, Mustang is a high-altitude desert where ochre cliffs, deep canyons, and windswept plateaus create a breathtaking and otherworldly panorama. Despite its remarkable landscapes, travelling to Mustang remained the domain of the most adventurous of travellers until recently in 2023 with the opening of the first luxury hotel in Lower Mustang, gateway to the “Kingdom of Lo-Manthang”.
Dotted with ancient monasteries and centuries-old villages, the ancestral isolation of Mustang has played a crucial role in preserving Mustang as one of the last few surviving bastions of traditional Tibetan life – beckoning discerning travellers to have a glimpse into the last forbidden Himalayan kingdom in style.
Note: If you would like to avail to domestic flight instead of a helicopter ride, additional 2 days in Pokhara’s Tiger Mountain Pokhara Lodge (Mountain View Room) will be added to connect your domestic flights between Kathmandu-Pokhara and Pokhara-Jomsom (and vice versa). Welcome to the Mystical Mustang
At 2,800 meters above sea level, Shinta Mani Mustang is one of the few places in Nepal where massive Himalayan peaks serve as your backdrop within close proximity-all while you are pampered in luxury.
After the journey to reach Mustang, you may want to unwind through the resort’s spa treatments or traditional healing practices offered by Amchi, the Tibetan and Himalayan medicine practitioners.
If you would like, you may take a leisurely walk around the area or hike the off-the- beaten trail to Thini Village for a glimpse into the local culture. As the sun sets, you will return to your resort with anticipation to unfold your soft adventure in Mustang over the next coming days.
Marpha Village Trek
This morning, enjoy a two-hour trek from Shinta Mani Mustang to Dumba Lake and Khutsab Terenga Monastery. Along the way, you will be blessed with a stunning view of Kali Gandaki, the world’s deepest valley.
Arriving into the monastery, enjoy an elegant picnic breakfast under an old apricot tree. Thereafter, you have the option to drive, trek or mountain bike into the Marpha Village.
Characterized by its traditional stone houses, apple orchards and beautifully painted Buddhist monasteries, this picturesque village offers an authentic glimpse into the rural Nepalese life. During the excursion, you will also enjoy an authentic local lunch hosted by Mrs. Kamala, a renowned Thakali Chef and civic leader.
Into the Heart of Jomsom Valley
Journey through the rugged landscapes of Jomsom Valley with vantage points of snow-capped Himalayan peaks, river streams or forests. Midway through the trek, let us treat you into a mountaineer- inspired picnic of high-energy foods and a glass of chilled Rosé.
This trek can be customized to your preferred length and difficulty level.
Spiritual & Village Immersion
Drive one hour to Jharkot. Framed by its iconic gompa, this quaint Tibetan village seems untouched with time. From here, you will take a serene hike through ancient orchards and suspension bridges into the ancient Jhong village, where you will tour a traditional home with a freshly prepared lunch at a monastery with 360-view of the surrounding valleys.
After lunch, an exhilarating jeep ride or mountain biking adventure takes you into Kagbeni Village to visit the Kag Chode Thupten Samphel Ling Monastery. This ancient monastery is an important Buddhist site attracting pilgrims and tourists alike.
For early risers who would like to depart two hours earlier, we can also offer optional extension to the revered Muktinath Hindu pilgrimage site. Bring your bathing suit if you would like to participate in the unique spiritual ritual of bathing in the sacred 108 fountains of Mukti Dhara. It is believed that doing so washes away one’s sins and brings salvation.
Sacred Trail of Bon Buddhism
Today’s hike through the Panda Khola River Gorge brings you into the secluded Lubra Village. This 800-year-old hamlet in the heart of Mustang is one of the last remaining strongholds of the ancient Bon Buddhist tradition, a spiritual practice which predates Buddhism.
From the venerable gompa and intriguing cave monastery to local cuisine served on the rooftop of an ancient home, this excursion brings you back in time to experience the unparallel local culture, traditions and flavors.
