FIXED GROUP DEPARTURE: 14 DAYS EXCLUSIVE SVALBARD PHOTOGRAPHY SAILING EXPEDITION (8 – 21 Aug 2025)

Oslo, Longyearben, Svalbard Coastline

Cruise, Off the Beaten, Nature & Wildlife

Highlights

  • August is the best season for photography in Svalbard, with 15-18 hours of daylight. The sun’s lower position in the sky creates soft, golden lighting, perfect for capturing glaciers, fjords, and wildlife.
  • An exclusive photography route aboard a small, privately chartered vessel, allowing access to the central parts of the archipelago, areas that larger ships can’t reach.
  • The ship accommodates a maximum of 12 guests, with two Zodiac boats available to ensure everyone can find the perfect photography spot.
  • Guided by award-winning Norwegian photographer Svein Wik, who will assist you in tracking polar bears and other Arctic wildlife.
  • Most fully inclusive arrangements and accompanied by Intriq’s Travel Concierge, also an experienced polar expedition leader.

Embark on an exclusive photography expedition to Svalbard this August, a golden season for capturing the Arctic’s raw beauty. With the sun casting soft, golden light across the glaciers and fjords for 15-18 hours, you’ll experience ideal conditions for stunning shots. Aboard our privately chartered vessel, with only 12 guests, you’ll explore remote parts of the archipelago—places inaccessible to regular tourists. Two Zodiac boats will bring you even closer to the action, while award-winning Norwegian photographer and expedition leader Svein Wik helps with tracking polar bears and Arctic wildlife for that perfect shot.

Oslo to Longyearbyen

Enjoy the morning at your own leisure.  After lunch, hop on your flight to Longyearbyen.

Longyearbyen, the main settlement in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago on the island of Spitsbergen, is one of the northernmost inhabited places in the world, with a permanent population of around 2,000. It lies near the Arctic, experiencing polar climate conditions for most of the year.

In August, Longyearbyen still benefits from the midnight sun, though the sun begins to hover near the horizon. This creates bright daylight for most of the day and provides photographers with a prolonged “golden hour” for shooting.

As the midnight sun gradually fades, the light softens and lasts longer, offering extended periods of dusk and dawn with rich color gradients. The prolonged “blue hour” presents magical opportunities to capture the stunning Arctic landscape.

D03 10 AUG 2025 (SUN) EMBARKATION IN LONGYEARBYEN

Svalbard Museum

After breakfast, visit the Svalbard Museum, which highlights the archipelago’s rich history and the deep connection between nature and human culture in this remote region.

Embarkation on Kinfish

After lunch, transfer to the Longyearbyen port to board the Kinfish vessel. Take some time to get acquainted with the ship’s facilities, meet the crew, and review safety procedures. Once everything is set, we will begin our journey, sailing towards Isfjorden and heading northwest, depending on ice conditions.

In early autumn, Svalbard offers the opportunity to photograph polar bears hunting on the ice and Arctic foxes in their grey and white coats. The golden and blue light of August creates exceptional conditions for photography.

Cruising the North Svalbard Coastline

During this ten-day expedition, you’ll have numerous opportunities to encounter Arctic wildlife up close. As we sail north through Raudfjorden, Liefdefjorden, and Woodfjorden, keep an eye out for polar bears, Arctic foxes, and a variety of bird species. Weather and ice conditions permitting, the expedition team will guide Zodiac boat excursions into the fjords for a more immersive exploration.

Main stops (subject to weather and ice conditions):

  • Alkhornet: A major nesting site for thousands of seabirds, where you may also spot polar bears and Arctic foxes scavenging below the cliffs.
  • Monaco Glacier: Zodiac excursions will bring you close to the glacier’s impressive ice formations. Wildlife sightings may include ringed seals, harbor seals, and polar bears resting on ice floes.
  • Nordaustlandet: Known for its vast glaciers and permanent ice caps, this area offers the chance to observe polar bears, seals, walruses, and Arctic foxes.
